MANTHAN — Holistic Education for Underprivileged Children

मंथन Manthan translates to “The churning of potential into wisdom”

Education that builds character.

Manthan runs Sampoorn Vikas Kendras, “complete development centres”, for children from slums and villages, where schoolwork comes with values, meditation and the confidence to aim higher.

The philosophy, demystified

The mission Values-based, holistic education for children in slum clusters and remote rural belts, through Sampoorn Vikas Kendras.

Indian stories tell of gods and demons churning the cosmic ocean, and of treasures rising from the depths. Manthan sees every child as that ocean, full of hidden gifts.

Literacy alone is not enough: academic skill without moral grounding can produce clever self-interest. DJJS holds that real education is not only information but transformation. Short daily meditation (Meditation) helps children focus, handle emotions and discover a steady centre within.

Values such as honesty, kindness and service (sewa (Selfless Service)) are taught alongside reading and mathematics, so that skill and character grow together.

How it works

The three pillars of Manthan

  1. Sampoorn Vikas Kendra

    Complete Development Centres

Safe, non-formal schools in slums and villages, run with volunteer teachers.

  2. Shuddh Poshan

    Nourishment & Health

Free mid-day meals, clean water and seasonal health screenings.

  3. Sanskar Shiksha

    Values Education

Ethics, music, public speaking, coding and meditation alongside schoolwork.

A story of transformation

Kavita, A slum cluster in Delhi

  1. Before

Kavita, the daughter of a daily-wage labourer, was out of school by the age of nine.

  2. The turn

At a Manthan Sampoorn Vikas Kendra she caught up three grades in two years.

  3. After

She is now pursuing a commerce degree, and teaches younger SVK children on weekends.

The story in three movements

The gap → The rising

  1. 01 The gap

    Talent without a doorway

A child in a slum or a remote village is as bright as any other, but often has no quiet place to study and no one to believe in them.

  2. 02 The churning

Bringing out what is already there

Manthan is named after the ancient image of churning the ocean to bring treasure to the surface. Education, here, draws out what the child already has.

  3. 03 The rising

    Marks and character, together

In the SVKs children receive academic support alongside values and meditation, so that they grow into capable and good adults.
